Stockholm based artist JÁNA is today releasing her new single "Lotus", the second track to be lifted from her upcoming debut EP Flowerworks, out July 3rd.
Co-written and produced by Little Dragon drummer Erik Bodin, "Lotus" is a song written about seeing beyond appearances and beauty. Its meticulous construction marked a new style of ambitious song craft for JÁNA; born out of a multitude of song ideas and countless demos, in its final form "Lotus" is a stunning jazz-inflected R&B cut marrying together woozy guitars, funk-inflected bass lines and tasteful electronics.
The idea for the song originally sprang from a conversation JÁNA had with a friend about the issues they face when presenting themselves. “My friend and I spoke about only being loved when showing off the 'final product', or 'the perfect version of yourself'. The Lotus is a flower that blooms in the most ugliest places. It can be seen as a metaphor to allow people to grow - something beautiful might grow from a less than beautiful situation.”
In a home-made studio in her parents’ garage, JÁNA creates collages of lyrics, images and sound sketches until a distinct narrative for a song emerges. “My goal is to create a world for each song to live in. I pay a lot of attention to lyrics. I want them to hit hard, but still be art. I want the songs to have a variety of potential interpretations depending on which way the listener hears it," she explains.
Collaborating with Little Dragon during the recording process of "Lotus", previous single "Wild Roses" and her upcoming Flowerworks EP, JÁNA says led her to be braver not only sonically but lyrically too, especially when it came to the deeply personal topics she decided to write about. Soon, it was evident that the EP she was creating was becoming a mediation on relationships as well as a chronicle of her own relationship.
JÁNA's new single "Lotus" is out now, released May 27th. JÁNA's debut EP Flowerworks is released July 3rd. |
