Today, critically acclaimed singer/songwriter Lauren Auder debuted the video for her new single “Heathen.” Directed by Layo Mussi, the video places Auder in a series of austere but beautifully cinematic backdrops. Whether she’s submerging herself in a pond fully clothed, ambling beside a blazing bonfire, or gazing out a fogged window as she rides through the countryside, Auder lights up each frame with her magnetic presence and ultimately heightens the song’s stormy intensity. “Heathen,” is from the London-based artist’s new EP titled, 5 Songs for the Dysphoric out now via True Panther and Harvest Records. The Clams Casino & dviance produced single was recently featured on i-D’s “Best New Music” playlist and Paste hailed it as one of their picks for “10 Best New Songs” calling the track, “utterly mesmerizing, blending dark dance-pop and noise-rock sounds, with only Auder’s deep baritone vocals to guide you through the haze.” Referring to the track as “my favourite song I’ve ever worked on,” Auder explains that “Heathen” is about “longing for a test run before life proper. Learning to accept that all we get is a 9-month-long bomb shelter before you’re very much in the world.”
About Lauren Auder
Originally from Albi (a town in Southwestern France), Lauren Auder creates emotionally potent and transportive pop music inspired by everything from hip-hop to post-rock to classical. With a sound akin to Scott Walker singing Lorde songs, Auder’s distinct aesthetic was first glimpsed on her critically lauded 2018 debut EP Who Carry’s You. Released in March 2020, her sophomore EP two caves in delivered the widely adored singles “june 14th” and “meek,” two tracks centered on Auder's intricate lyricism and mesmerizing vocals. With her live experience including international tours with Christine and the Queens and Amen Dunes, Auder has also emerged as a captivating new presence in the fashion world, working for the likes of Gucci and being tapped as the face for Hedi Slimane’s debut collection for Celine in 2018. The first body of work she’s written since publicly coming out as trans, 5 Songs for the Dysphoric finds Auder opening up her artistic process and joining forces with producers/co-writers like Danny L Harle (Charli XCX, Clairo), Tobias Jesso Jr (HAIM, King Princess), and Clams Casino (Vince Staples, Lil B). “I think part of the reason the past two EPs were made in such an insular way was that I needed to discover myself and get to the point where I felt confident in my artistic voice,” says Auder of 2018’s Who Carry’s You and 2020’s two caves in. “By the time I made this EP I felt comfortable enough to let in some exterior influences, without being afraid that it would no longer sound like me.” Arguably her most absorbing material to date, 5 Songs for the Dysphoric embodies a kinetic sound that’s vastly more free-flowing than Auder’s earlier work, but no less immersive and grandiose. Along with “Heathen,” the EP features previously released singles “Quiet” (dubbed a “deceptively majestic love song” by Idolator) and “Animal” (praised by Clash as “stark and uncompromising”). In addition, 5 Songs for the Dysphoric includes “Unseen” feat. Celeste, an incandescent duet between Auder and the British singer/songwriter.
