Newport Jazz Festival Announces Doris Duke Charitable Foundation Leadership Grant

Newport Jazz Festival Announces
Doris Duke Charitable Foundation Leadership Grant

Over its six and a half decades, the Newport Jazz Festival® has been committed to providing artists a platform to showcase their mastery and innovation to the public, students and educators. The Jazz Festival has been preserving and expanding Jazz’s legacy and impact by igniting interest in new generations of Jazz lovers through their Jazz Assembly programs and educational initiatives. Now, the Newport Jazz Festival and the Newport Festivals Foundation will be able to continue their work as a recipient of a Doris Duke Charitable Foundation Leadership Grant. “As a foundation that believes and invests in the vitality of jazz, the Newport Jazz Festival is an important partner for us,” said Ed Henry, president of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation (DDCF). “For more than 65 years, the festival has presented jazz legends, offered platforms for promising emerging artists, and created an artistic space that showcases to global audiences the deep roots and evolution of this music. DDCF is pleased to provide this grant to recognize the leadership role the festival has played in the field and to help it continue to support artists and the music into the future.”

Since its inception, the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation’s Arts Program has recognized that substantial support to exemplary arts organizations plays an essential role in supporting the creative lives and livelihoods of artists. The Leadership Grants were designed to enhance organizations’ abilities to adapt to a complex, evolving environment that often obstructs their ability to plan and achieve long-term institutional goals and business plans. The grant will expand Newport’s Jazz-specific music education programming through content capture and curriculum development as well as provide artists with additional revenue streams.

The Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals, created by George Wein in 1954 and 1959 respectively, are some of the longest running music festivals in history. Newport Jazz has been home to legendary performances by Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, John Coltrane, and Herbie Hancock while Newport Folk has had its stages graced by its co-founder Pete Seeger, Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan. Widely considered two of the most treasured cultural institutions in American history, they are known for their once-in-a-lifetime collaborations and more for what’s not announced than what is. For over sixty years, the Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals have shown that music has the ability to positively impact the communities and lives it touches. “Doris Duke, who had a home in Newport, was often in attendance at the Newport Jazz Festival,” says founder George Wein. “I’m sure Miss Duke would be happy to see that DDCF is giving such meaningful support to Newport Festivals Foundation and what it means to the cultural life of Rhode Island, America and the world.”

In 2008, Jay Sweet joined Newport Folk Festival as Co-Producer. Since then, Sweet has steadily grown Newport Folk Festival from operating at a loss to becoming an immediate sellout months in advance of the festival and before announcing a single artist. The growth of the Folk Festival has allowed the organization to invest in the future of its festivals as well as expand the impact and reach of its music education initiatives. Now Sweet has taken on the dual role of Executive Producer for both the Newport Folk and Newport Jazz Festivals. The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation’s Leadership Grant recognizes Jay Sweet, George Wein’s legacy and the Newport Jazz Festival’s continued commitment to diversity, education and support of artists in the Jazz Community. “It is such an honor to receive this grant from DDCF,” says Sweet. “With the legacy of Newport Jazz, my team and I feel an immense obligation to not only preserve jazz’s history, but allow it to evolve and flourish as its future unfolds - we can't do that alone. Having a partner like DDCF, who understands that cultivating the next iterations of jazz lovers relies heavily on music education and providing opportunities to grow, means the world to us, especially in times like these. The long term effects this pandemic will have on music have yet to be seen. But together, with the support of DDCF, we have the will and means to ensure that the jazz community will not only survive but thrive.”

In 2010 the festivals returned to their non-profit roots of the 1950’s by creating the Newport Festivals Foundation, whose mission is to expand the impact of its music festivals through educational initiatives that celebrate innovation while preserving the deep traditions inherent in Jazz and Folk music. The Newport Festival Foundation believes every person deserves access to music education, regardless of socioeconomic status. Upon its creation, the Foundation expanded beyond the summer festivals to include music education programs. The program partnerships they have developed now support a large and successful local, regional, and national network. In 2020, more than 22,000 students in 23 states and territories participated in programs; 650 instruments were provided to student musicians; and over 100 schools, after-school programs, and other non-profits were program partners. In particular, one of the Foundation’s programs, Jazz Ambassadors, directly served 12,000 students directly, prior to being suspended due to the pandemic in March 2020.

About Newport Festivals Foundation:
Newport Festivals Foundation fosters the legacy and expands the impact of its Festivals through educational initiatives that celebrate innovation while preserving the deep traditions inherent in Jazz and Folk music. The Foundation’s goal is to offer opportunity, inspire through exposure and facilitate the collection of resources needed for musicians to celebrate and innovate. The focus on creating unique experiences to spark engagement is accomplished through a variety of initiatives, including instrument donations and performances at schools throughout Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut.

For more information on education initiatives offered by Newport Festivals Foundation, visit newportfestivals.org.

About The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation:
The mission of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation (DDCF) is to improve the quality of people’s lives through grants supporting the performing arts, environmental conservation, medical research and child well-being, and through preservation of the cultural and environmental legacy of Doris Duke’s properties. The Arts Program of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation focuses its support on contemporary dance, jazz and theater artists, and the organizations that nurture, present and produce them.

Announcing The Sled Island Lemonade Stand

ANNOUNCING THE SLED ISLAND LEMONADE STAND
MAKING THE BEST OF IT WITH LIVESTREAMS FROM SUDAN ARCHIVES AND WAXAHATCHEE, COMPILATIONS OF UNRELEASED SONGS FROM CALGARY ARTISTS, A MIXTAPE EXCHANGE, DJ AND COMEDY SETS, FILM SCREENINGS, ART EXHIBITIONS, PLAYLISTS AND MORE COMMUNITY INITIATIVES!
(June 17, 2020 - Calgary, AB) With the summer festival season more or less cancelled, including Sled Island 2020, today we're announcing how we're going to squeeze every ounce of goodness from the bag of lemons we were given with a brand new initiative: The Sled Island Lemonade Stand. From Monday, June 22 until Sunday, June 28, we will be doing what we can to tip our hat to the festival week that would have been with a series of free or accessibly-priced livestreams, film screenings, comedy and DJ sets and varied activities taking place both online and in-person. By no means a simple online or socially-distanced version of the festival we had previously planned, nor a replacement for it, the Lemonade Stand tries to reinforce the pillars of the Sled Island experience over the years: fun, discovery, community and the celebration of thoughtful and vital music and art.
MUSIC
We are thrilled to announce that our 2020 guest curator, electronic and R&B-infused violinist/vocalist Sudan Archives, will join us for a special free livestream concert and Q&A. Sled Island alum, Waxahatchee, will also be performing her perfectly-penned and highly confessional album Ivy Tripp in its entirety online as part of her five-week livestream series covering her entire discography.
As part of the week, Sled Island is likewise thrilled to announce the upcoming release of two digital compilations: The Sled Island Lemonade Stand Vol. 1 & 2, comprising over 40 (!) previously unreleased songs from every genre written and recorded by Calgary artists in or just before quarantine. Featured artists include The Shiverettes, DRI HIEV, Sinzere, Samantha Savage Smith, Astral Swans, Teafannie, Chron Goblin, Selci and many more! The compilation drops Monday, June 22 as a "pay what you can" release.
An essential part of every Sled Island is having other festival-goers tip you off to must-hear acts. Today, we are launching the Sled Island Mixtape Exchange to fill that gap as best we can. Sign up now to create and receive a personalized mixtape or playlist from other festival lovers, and maybe, just maybe make a new friend in the process?
FILM
We are thrilled to have partnered with the Calgary Underground Film Festival to present a special drive-in screening of Uncle Peckerhead at the Big Rock Brewery, and online screenings of This Film Should Not Exist, a documentary about The Oblivians and Country Teasers, and Five Bucks At The Door, a brand new documentary about a legendary Thunder Bay music venue, complete with pre-show Sled-curated music video packages. We are also excited to announce a special co-presentation screening of Quickdraw Animation Society's year-in-review package.
COMEDY
We're excited to announce Virtual Laugh-con 2020, our streaming comedy program featuring Telefilm New Voices award winner Brandon Ash-MohammedTallboyz and Baroness von Sketch Show writer Meg MacKay and adept comic scene stealer Jackie Pirico! All this plus Calgary's own Mollie Risa.
ART
The festival is proud to announce Simone Saunders' TUF(t) LOVE, an exhibition of colourful hand-tufted textiles exploring identity, culture and a Black heritage. The festival will also be helping to promote the launch of The National Music Centre's newly launched Speak Up, an online exhibition in recognition of National Indigenous People Day.
OTHER ONGOING COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES:
In addition to these streams and initiatives, Sled Island is presenting a series of daily activities ranging from in-person and online DJ sets and a podcast produced by CJSW, to Sled-curated music and video playlists and reading lists from Shelf Life Books and Sue's Stokvel, to a specially curated rack filled with Sled Island's history at Sloth Records. We are encouraging our community to pair their day's schedule with delicious beer from one of seven Alberta breweries (Annex Ale Project, Blindman Brewery, Dandy Brewing Company, Eighty-Eight Brewing Co., Highline Brewery, Inner City Brewing, Last Best Brewery), because, though lemonade can be thirst-quenching, it's got nothing on beer. We have also designed a Sled Island Bike Scavenger Hunt, encouraging everyone to get off their couches or away from their screens and venue hop across the city to see standout photos of memorable sets from the festival's archives for a chance to win Sled swag!
Lastly, as a multi-venue festival that was built on partnerships, Sled Island knows how essential small businesses are to a thriving community. Choosing how and where we spend our money is a great way to contribute to both building the society we want and evening the playing field. During the week of The Lemonade Stand and beyond, we are asking our community to support (within their means) not just the venues and community partners that typically provide the spaces and resources that make the festival possible, but also Black-owned businesses. All of these organizations deserve not just to survive, but thrive. Thank you for supporting the local community!
Thanks for stopping by the Sled Island Lemonade Stand, June 22-28, 2020!
The full lineup and schedule is available at SledIsland.com.

What’s up their sleeve? Not just a highly curated mix of mindblowing sounds from Diplo, Nahko (Live), Nightmares on Wax, BLOND:ISH, Themba, Lunar Disco; not just magic from mentalist/illusionists; but an embodiment of our best possible selves, mirrored through self love, brain games, yoga, 3D sound exploration, meditation and more (‘The Class’’ Taryn Toomey and Jai Dev Singh will also feature)… with surprises to keep your inner child alive.

‘ABRA is all about creating your own reality, because magic is everywhere!’

Always forward thinking, ABRACADABRA is one of the first electronic music brands to run single-use plastic free events. Since 2017, their vibes have throbbed in Tulum, Tomorrowland, and Mykonos... Now they’re adapting their craft of putting on legendary parties in paradise and shifting to our current world; ABRA TV provides a one stop show to support artists and creatives, providing a space for them to connect and create magic with their talents and passions, ‘all around our beloved music, the glue that brings us all together.’

ABRACADABRA Virtual Festival has partnered with Bye Bye Plastic Foundation, the grass roots organisation on track to remove single-use plastic from the music industry by 2025. BBP, dreamed into being and led by Vivie-Ann, has inspired thousands of DJs and event promoters to join the #plasticfreeparty mission with their ‘Eco Rider’, onsite activations, beach cleans, and innovative research since launching in 2018. BBP officially became a Foundation in January 2020, and have partnered and consulted with industry giants such as International Music Summit (IMS) & SXM Festival and led sustainability panels at ADE Green, IMS, Brighton Music Conference and beyond.

Bye Bye Plastic will host experts and brands like Mogu's Maurizio Montalti (‘Mycelium Magic’) and industry trailblazers like Elektrik Fantasy Festival and Ultra Music Festival (‘Miami’s Sustainable Party Fairies’) to thrash out new ideas and set a path for sustainable raving.

This is only the beginning for this adventure, as the channel will be developing into something increasingly inclusive. ABRACADABRA TV will be a hub to show you magic exists and show you how to create it in your own life so you can spread it far and wide.  ‘We’re starting with this festival, and the channel will constantly be evolving, and we’ll be inviting our community to share their own passions with us and each other.’

And! To celebrate its first virtual festival and to give back to the community ABRACADABRA is giving 1 Bitcoin and lifetime subscriptions to ABRA TV on Twitch to a group of lucky friends. To enter the contest, Instagram users can tag 2 or more friends in the comments on ABRA’s lineup announcement post (@welcometoabracadabra) and anyone can RSVP at https://www.abracadabra.life/rsvp to enter again for an extra chance to win. Over 90 musicians join forces for compilation album benefitting Black Lives Matter

BANK ROBBER MUSIC AND ROUGH TRADE PUBLISHING ANNOUNCE
TALK - ACTION = ZERO

A COMPILATION ALBUM BENEFITTING BLACK VISIONS COLLECTIVE

 COMPILATION FEATURES OVER 90 ARTISTS

INCLUDES A MULTITUDE OF RARE AND UNRELEASED
ORIGINALS AND COVERS

AVAILABLE EXCLUSIVELY ON BANDCAMP ON FRIDAY JUNE 5,
WHEN BANDCAMP WAIVES ALL FEES
Independent artists from around the world have come together to create Talk - Action = Zero: a compilation album that pays tribute to the countless Black Americans who have been murdered due to police brutality. Talk - Action = Zero will be released Friday, June 5th exclusively on Bandcamp. The album was curated by Bank Robber Music and Rough Trade Publishing in just a few days, and all proceeds will benefit Black Visions Collective.

The complication was created in reaction to the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and the countless other acts of violence against Black people that happen every day due to systemic racism, white supremacy and police brutality. The album features over 90 songs, including previously unreleased music from Phantogram, Jesse Malin, Jay Watts, Matthew Caws of Nada Surf, Bartees Strange, Lonemoon, Rogue Wave, and Crashing Hotels, as well as contributions from Nick Andre, Worriers, Lateef The Truth Speaker, Sulene, Superchunk, and Damon & Naomi, as well as featured demos, vintage cuts and live recordings.

All proceeds will benefit Black Visions Collective, a Black run organization based in Minnesota that aims to develop Minnesota's emerging Black leadership, heal the Black community through justice, support the local LGBTQA community, organize powerful, strategic campaigns and build movements from the ground up. Black Visions Collective also hosts talks, art exhibitions and celebrations to boost the voices of Black and LGBTQA people and build a larger sense of community in Minnesota. For more information about Black Visions Collective, visit blackvisionsmn.org/.

Emily Roman of Bank Robber Music states “We as a small company have always been committed to our artist community, but it would be a disservice to not recognize that the music we love and the roster of artists we represent are influenced by Black culture. The artist and the Black community are in the midst of changing times. We wanted to use our platform to amplify the two communities that allow us to do what we love every day in this industry. We are extremely grateful for all the artists we work with who quickly mobilized to be a part of this benefit compilation; We are here for our artists, and we stand with Black Lives Matter. This is the time to dive in, dig deep and take action.”

It took less than a week for the compilation to come together, from inception to completion, based on the eagerness of so many artists to contribute to take action by making a unified statement against white supremacy, racism and police brutality while actively raising funds for a pro-Black organization. The track list is comprised mostly of artists who work directly with Bank Robber Music and Rough Trade Publishing. The compilation will be available exclusively through Bandcamp and will be launch on Friday, June 5, when Bandcamp will be waiving their fees on all sales on, and will reduced their fee moving forward in order to maximize the amount of funds raised for Black Visions Collective.
