New York, NY – 4.23.2021 – Night Beats is sharing new single “Revolution” today, the latest slice of hedonistic garage-psych to be lifted from the Texas-born outfit’s forthcoming Outlaw R&B LP. Due out June 4th on Fuzz Club Records, the new album sees Danny Lee Blackwell steer the band back to its raw, acid-fried roots in a blaze of glory. The fifth Night Beats album to date, Outlaw R&B arrives off the back of 2019’s Dan Auerbach (Black Keys)-produced Myth Of A Man LP and last year’s “That’s All You Got” 7” featuring Black Rebel Motorcycle Club’s Robert Levon Been. Arriving after recent singles “Ticket” and “New Day,” “Revolution” sees Blackwell present what could be pinned as an anthemic counter-cultural romp through a technicolour haze. Yet, he offers the song in conjunction with a self-directed and shot (with the help of Chris Maciel) video that explores a darker side to its revolutionary themes by weaving the story of a deranged loner coming to grips with the struggle in his own sick mind.
“Revolution can take many forms. I wanted to explore the different dimensions of the word and how it plays out in our minds. From bliss inducing self-liberation to the false consciousness of a serial killer, ‘Revolution’ is a profound ability of our minds. The song takes new meanings through the video. The character is clearly conflicted, troubled over what he's done or is about to do. But the process or revolution in his mind has brought him to this parking lot, while his prey remains trapped in the trunk of his green 71' Chevelle.”
In the video, which nods to classic thrillers by way of The Twilight Zone, Blackwell continues: "You are entering into another dimension…one of sound, one of sight…a dimension of the mind. You are led into a land of both shadow and substance. A bump in the trunk of the mind. ‘Revolution’ is yours for the taking, but take heed as the noxious fumes emanating from the pitfalls of the mind are sweet.”
“New Day,” “Ticket,” and “Revolution” set the tone for Outlaw R&B, an LP that deals in a psychedelic, R&B-infused sound. On the album we also hear Night Beats dabble in a more Eastern-influenced sound that parts ways with much of the Western thirteenth-floor psychedelia that courses through the band’s veins. Blackwell is of half-Indian, half-American heritage and was raised in a Hindu and Catholic household – a multicultural upbringing which has long influenced his creative output.
With four albums now behind them – their self-titled 2011 debut, 2013’s Sonic Bloom, 2016’s Who Sold My Generation and 2019’s Myth of A Man – Night Beats has garnered a reputation as one of the finest purveyors of contemporary rock’n’roll hedonism around. They’ve clocked up critical acclaim, toured across North and South America, Europe, Asia and South Africa and shared the stage with the likes of The Black Angels, Roky Erickson, The Jesus and Mary Chain, BRMC, The Zombies, Black Lips, Ty Segall and Thee Oh Sees, among many others. Their fifth album, Outlaw R&B, arrives June 4th on London-based label Fuzz Club Records.
